Horses for sale

Our horses and ponies have been loyal and devoted companions, colleagues and friends over the years.

Nothing would make us happier than to be able to keep each and every one of them here at Brenfield even though we will no longer be offering riding. But financially and logistically it would be impossible.

Tove and David are more than proud of all of them; some have competed at World Championship level in TREC, others have given beginner or cautious riders the confidence to progress their riding skills, some are just so caring and generous, some have so much personality it's more fun on the yard than in the house - all of them are greatly loved.

Prices will vary for each of our boys and girls, the most important thing to us is to find them loving permanent homes where they will be happy and get to do what they do best - taking you riding! Anywhere and everywhere.

This page will be updated over the next few days with information on each of our horses and also with recent pictures. Please keep checking back.

BRENFIELD MONTY

Monty is a 17 year old, 17.3hh, Shire x, Gelding. He is a big, beautiful bay with a dashing white blaze. Known affectionately as 'Monty-saurus' because he's huge! Monty has feet the size of dinner plates and boy does he know how to use them! This lad has happily and safely taken riders through the glens and hills of Glencoe where our adventurous Rob Roy trail navigated. He is a firm favourite amongst the taller girls on the yard (have you tried brushing a 17.3 horse when you only stand at 5'3"?!) and he thoroughly enjoys all the different types of riding available to him here at Brenfield. He will give any experienced rider hours of pleasure but we also use him regularly to take out beginner riders. He's a dream to handle and is used to travelling by trailer/horsebox. He's also great with the farrier and vet.

BRENFIELD RHUM

Rhum is a 15 year old, 16.3, TBxID, bay mare. She is one of Tove's favourite mares and many of you will have been led on a ride by Tove and Rhum. Rhum is a brave and magnificent horse. She will try her best to take you over, under, round or through anything you put in front of her to get you where you have asked her to take you. You can see why she is one of Tove's special horses! Rhum is suitable for riders of any ability but to fulfil her potential she would really benefit from an experienced rider who is looking for a keen forward going horse who wants to learn more, wants to please and wants to ride bigger and better! She is very responsive and we would love her to go to an exciting home. She is used to travelling by trailer/horsebox and is no problem to the farrier or the vet

Rhum (ridden by Wendy Taylor) competing at a qualifying competition for the BHS TREC British Championships 2010. She placed 4th in her class and is due to compete at the Championships on the 14th and 15th of August.

BRENFIELD SAMSON

Samson is an 18 year old, 16hh, coloured cob gelding. He is a horse that many people ask after as he has always been a firm favourite with riders. Sam is strong, brave and kind. He inspires such confidence in riders who have lost their nerve that many return to us time after time. He is also an old hand at the trickier days on trail - if ever a route looks questionable it's Sam who checks it out for us. On top of that he's simply stunning to look at! Sam does have an impressive scar on his hind quarter. It does not affect him in the slightest. We think it was possibly from an accident involving a trailer years before he came to us (and in fact he's quite proud of it and likes to show it off to the girls!). Sam verges on the angelic regardless of what horrors we put him through - fine with trailer/lorry, farrier and vet.

 BRENFIELD FRAOCH

Fraoch (frew-och) is a 16 year old, 15.3hh, coloured cob mare. She is sweet, gentle and willing with all riders whether beginner or experienced. Her name is the Scottish Gaelic for 'Heather' and suits her very well indeed. She looks most at home when trekking out in the hills of Argyll, her stamina is amazing and her confident powerful walk eats up the miles. She also loves the thrill of tearing down the beach and taking small jumps. She would happily jump anything we asked her to, but due to having her hocks fused some years ago we do (try!) to limit her jumping. A very classy lady who takes everything (lorry/trailer, farrier, vet) in her stride.

 BRENFIELD ALFIE

Alfie is a 23 year old, 15.2hh, bay cob gelding. Despite getting on a bit in years and being a true gentleman, he still acts like an eight year old when it suits him! A proper school master when required (just try getting him to do something without giving the correct aids!!) he also loves nothing more than a fun ride through the fields. Bogs, jumps, hills, trees, rivers, rain, sun, sand, sea, trails, trec, shows... Alfie has seen it all and done it all with ears pricked and nose forward. He has many fun filled years left to share with someone. He would make a great horse for anyone who would like a steady safe mount for hacking out who will tackle any unforeseens with the greatest of ease. A proper gent with travelling, farrier and vet.

BRENFIELD BRAGI

Bragi is an 18 year old, 15.2hh, bay TBxWelsh gelding. The famous Bragi is just overflowing with character. This boy has us in fits of giggles every single day. The only horse on the yard to have successfully waited around a corner, bucket of water in mouth and emptied it over a poor unsuspecting helper as she walked around the corner. He is very, very funny! And cheekiness aside, he is also a fantastic trail horse. Bragi has been a familiar face on the TREC circuit for many years now and has competed at a very high level. He is confident, agile and very clever which makes riding him an absolute treat. He needs excitement wherever he ends up. He will really go to waste if he doesn't get to use his brain - and to be quite honest, we are terrified as to what he might scheme up if he has too much time on his hands. He's great to travel and very good with both farrier and vet.

BRENFIELD HORACE

Horace is a 16 year old, 15.2hh, grey cob gelding. Horace is one of our most requested trail horses. People fall head over heels in love with Horace after riding him. He is so giving, whether it's a long day on trail or an exciting TREC competition, Horace really does give it his all. He's strong and fast and an all round fantastic ride. He is a good traveller and is great with the vet and the farrier.

BRENFIELD ISLAY

Islay is a 9 year old, 15.1hh, grey roan Murakozi x Sodrott mare. Islay is strong, faithful, sweet and still a baby in many ways. She has come on leaps and bounds, thanks to Tove's time and effort, since coming to us as a five year old. She will happily carry riders weighing up to 16 stone and has worked her way firmly into many a heart over the last few years. She is a terrific trail horse but, more than anything, she loves to play. Give this girl obstacles to work out and she's in her element. Islay did very well in the Qualifier for the British TREC Championships and we have high hopes for her future within TREC. She would really benefit from an experienced rider (although she is perfectly safe for novices) to further her education and allow her to fulfil her potential. She is happy to travel and is good as gold with the farrier and vet.

Left - Islay, ridden by Lorna Wallace, competing at a qualifying competition for the BHS TREC British Championships 2010. Right - Islay relaxing in the sun with some of the Brenfield team after a long weekend.

BRENFIELD SEAMUS

Seamus is a 21 year old, 15.1hh, beautiful bay cob gelding. Not one rider has EVER guessed Seamus' age correctly (cat's out of the bag now!). He truly is young at heart and he is simply gorgeous. He also knows he is a good looking boy and will turn around in his stable or stall (even if this proves to be a rather awkward maneuver!) so that the light hits him 'just so'. One must always show one's best face. Seamus is an old hand at our trails and loves nothing more than racing about the tracks and fields, often leaving other horses sneezing on the dust kicked up in his wake! He really needs a home where he can continue to enjoy himself, he needs interesting and exciting riding to maintain his youthful looks. Seamus is fantastic with both the vet and the farrier but he does not travel well, so a home with plenty of interesting riding nearby would be preferable for him.

BRENFIELD ASGARD

Asgard is a 17 year old, 15hh, black cob mare. Asgard - 'Capital City of the Norse Gods'. An impressive name for an impressive girl. She never lets us down. She is more than happy to take small children out on lead rein rides and then take experienced riders on a beach gallop that very same day. She is the kind of horse you can rely on whatever the circumstances and that's the kind of reassuring presence you need in a truly great trail horse. She spends her time teaching youngsters and novices to ride and then gets to go and have fun by riding on trail or galloping on the beach. She loves to travel and is great with the farrier and vet.

Left - Asgard, ridden by Mairi Bruce, competing at a Qualifier for the British TREC Championships 2010.  Right - Asgard leaving the water after a swim in the Loch.

BRENFIELD FULLA

Fulla is an 11 year old, 15.1hh, coloured cob mare. Fulla is a very special horse. Named after a Norse Goddess she is one of the kindest mares you will ever meet, people just love being around her. Fulla is a terrific ride and can deal calmly and deftly with all situations. We would really love to see Fulla go to a home where there is the opportunity for her to be put into foal. She had the most beautiful foal some years ago that sadly died from an infection after being wounded in the field. Fulla was a very sad horse for a long time after this but has really come into her own these past few years. She is now happy, lively and great fun but nothing would warm our souls more than hearing that she was with foal again - the time is right for her. She is an angel to handle for the farrier and vet and travels without any problems.

BRENFIELD GIMLI

Gimli is a 14 year old, 15hh, black cob mare. Gimli is not named after the dwarf of Tolkien fame but instead after the 'most beautiful place on earth, more beautiful than the sun" as described in Norse mythology. Gimli is a sleek, powerful trail riding machine! She is unflappable and great fun to ride. She loves stomping up craggy hillsides and relishes challenges. She looks quite magnificent as her black glossy mane and tail are caught up in the Scottish mountain breezes. Gimli would benefit from a rider that's happy to go exploring on horseback. She is an easy going mare who just loves to be ridden and we can't think of a situation that she wouldn't just breeze through. She is a sweetheart for the vet and farrier and has no problems travelling.

Left - Gimli, ridden by Catrina MacLean, competing in one of our Kelly Marks Winter Series TREC events.  Right - Gimli relaxing in the field.

BRENFIELD BEANS

Beans is a 19 year old, 14.1hh, grey Highland Pony gelding. Beans is a magnificent example of all that being a Highland Pony stands for. He is strong, faithful, surefooted and cheeky! The tales of Beans' (and some of the other horses') adventures should be written into a book. Beans has enjoyed many a week of trekking through Glencoe. Either with rider aboard or as nominated pack horse he can always be trusted to deliver whatever he's carrying to it's destination. Beans is a true Highland gentleman and will not stand for any nonsense. He loves to have fun but beware the rider who rides in a lazy or sluggish manner, this is very disrespectful to a pony of distinction. He will show his displeasure by planting his well formed little feet and awaiting a 'correct' instruction. He simply *must* go to a home with a lot of life and laughter around. He is super to travel and doesn't blink an eye at the farrier or the vet.

Beans raring to go on a day of trail.

BRENFIELD PRINCE

Prince is a 27 year old, 14.2hh, bay TB x Welsh gelding. Prince is one of our veterans and is still going strong. The most important thing to remember with prince is that he does not know he's a pony. And nobody must ever tell him. He thinks he is a big horse and we're happy to let him believe it. Prince has completed many of our trails in the past but it would not be fair to ask him to do a whole week now - although he would happily give it a go! He still rides on some days of the trail but we tell him that "the other horses really need a shot too, so if you wouldn't mind too much could you please stay and look after things at the farm?". Prince seems quite happy with this arrangement. Especially if it's raining. He has been a great friend to many youngsters over the past few years and we would like him to find a nice quite home where he can be ridden daily and not feel obliged to do too much. He has earnt an awful lot of cuddles and pampering. He is a pro at travelling and dealing with vets and farriers. He's seen them all!

BRENFIELD SHADOW

Shadow is a 14 year old, 13.1hh, broken dapple grey Highland pony x gelding. Shadow is terrific fun and will go anywhere and do anything. He is full of energy and is, despite his smaller stature, one of our most used trail riding ponies. He would happily turn around at the end of a week on trail and do the whole trail again in reverse. He also leaves us little choice in the matter - if the ramp of the lorry was, hypothetically speaking(!), left open to air, there would be a little grey pony trying to get in it because it means getting to go on trail! He loves to work. He's a dream pony with a very big heart and a very big personality. And a very distinguished moustache that we must insist is never trimmed - it's far too magnificent. There is no stopping him travelling and he is excellent with the farrier and vet.

Left - Shadow enjoying some fun in the evening sun. Right - Shadow being put through his paces in the school.

 BRENFIELD SEAN

Sean is a 26 year old, 13hh, grey Eriskay Pony gelding. Sean is probably one of our most well known ponies. He has given many children their first horse riding experience and he has taken riders from across the world over some of the most inaccessible areas of Scotland. He will be sorely missed at Brenfield as we always thought he would be with us for all of his life. The fairest thing to our loyal friend though is to find him a loving home. Eriskays are famed for their longevity and Sean has many years of pleasurable riding left to share with someone. They are a rare breed of pony and we here at Brenfield would love to see the Eriskay population grow in the future - we cannot recommend them highly enough. Sean has made up for his small size with heaps of attitude and plenty of heart. He refuses to be left behind when out on rides and will work his wee socks off to make sure that he sticks with the group. In fact he will happily lead the ride if given half a chance! He needs lots and lots of love and a nice rider to go out and have fun with. He travels happily and is fine with both vet and farrier.

Sean competing in the level 1 class of our BHS TREC British Championships Qualifier 2010.
